Mac Matte Lipstick, Velvet Teddy
Right. So I know we’ve all heard more than enough about this one recently, haven’t we? Surely? I mean, you really just can’t miss it. We’re talkin’ Twitter, Insta, you name it – Velvet Teddy is everywhere. In fact, it’s quite literally the shade on everyone’s lips at the moment. One way or another. And that, is some serious hype right there guys. Well at least for a lippie, anyway. But with an abundance of adoring fans flocking to buy it and I dare say just as many Velvet-Teddy-lovin’ hashtags kicking around lately too (go, look) – well, quite frankly, I just didn’t get it.
What was all that fuss about, really? Like, a nude is only a nude after all, right? Nope. Apparently not. And oh, how wrong I was. Until of course, I googled those two little words – that is, Kylie Jenner. And there it was. The answer I’d be looking for. Along with picture after picture (after picture) of her, good ol’ VT and all it’s magically lip-enhancing glory. Ahem. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not entirely convinced that the big ol’ boost provided in that region is necessarily all down to one little lipstick. Although there ain’t no denying that the universally-complimentary yet oh-so-subtle shade it imparts definitely does help things along a fair bit. But hey, what do I know? And in honesty, all that publicity aside – Velvet Teddy is pretty damn fine nude in it’s own right anyway.
Perhaps even one of the very best that there is, I’d say. Credit where credit’s due and all. Not too pink yet not too brown and not even in the slightest bit orangey. It’s a winner. Completely refined yet the epitome of flattering, a my-lips-but-better-kinda-deal and then some. And you know what? I reckon everyone should have at least one of em to fall back on. Or even three. The only catch? £15.50 a pop guys, I’m afraid. And maybe even more importantly – it’s pretty much sold out always and everywhere too (thanks Kylie). So with that lot in mind, what if there was a lipstick so entirely similar yet readily available – you really couldn’t tell them apart? Even head to head? And all that, for half the price of a MAC? Well, now you’re listening, aren’t you..
Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in Mauve It Over
And the REVLON SUPER LUSTROUS MATTE LIPSTICK IN MAUVE IT OVER really does bear more than just a passing resemblance to infamous Jenner-favourite. Seriously. Delivering that unmistakable and ridiculously versatile, suit-all nudey hue via that same deliciously full coverage and softly pigmented formula. But officially described as a ‘pink-peach brown with warm undertones’ – I’d say they’ve got it in one. More than brown enough to hit that ‘of-the-moment’ 90s look we all know and love but with those added pinkish tones thrown in for good measure too – making the whole thing a helluva lot more everyday-friendly.
And y’know, natural. Even if I do say so myself. We’re talking more ‘trend-led’ and less Walking-Dead with this one. Although coming from me, I’ll take either. Naturally. I mean sure, the drugstore version does pull ever-so slightly more peachy in tone than VT and perhaps appears just a tad lighter on the lips as well. But in fairness, it really is the closest of calls. And you know what? It too makes the most ideal companion for the likes of the infamous Whirl and Soar lipliners (or pretty much anything really), if that’s ya thang. And if it ain’t, the NYX liner in shade Mauve is another decent dupe right there. Just saying.
Okay. You got me. The overly matte finish that we’ve become accustomed to from VT is lost a little along the way with it’s lookalike, but only by a smidgen really. As in, while the budget offering is mostly matte on the lips, it actually does offer the tiniest added hint of creamy when you throw it on. You needn’t worry though, that initial bit o’ glossy that it first delivers up soon passes – leaving you with the flat matte that you’re cravin’ once again. So, I guess all is really well that ends well – right? And in reality, the majority of you might actually prefer that kinda thing anyway. In fact, it definitely does make application an actual breeze if nothing else. There’s no feathering, no dragging, no nothing. It’s quite literally a doddle to work with. But honestly, I just gotta admit – VT does very slightly
pip it to the post in the finish department for me. I know. I’m fickle. What can I say guys? I just know what I like, and that’s it. But for those of you lot that aren’t quite as matte-aholic as I am (hmm) – well, you’ll be laughing. Dare I suggest that you might even favour it over the MAC? Oh, I dare. And I don’t take that kinda statement lightly either. Then when it comes to wear time, this baby’ll rivel the best of em – VT included. You get a good few hours and then some before it calls out for a touch up. And while it certainly ain’t hydrating, it’s by no means drying either. Just, comfortable. And with a saving like that? Well, that’s what I call a success.
So, what are your thoughts? Are you a Teddy-lover too?
